Rapid clicking
Fast clicking with dim dash lights almost always means the battery doesn't have enough charge to turn the starter. Try a jump start. If it starts right up, the battery is weak or something is draining it.
One loud click
A single click with bright dash lights usually means power is reaching the starter, but the starter isn't turning. That's often a failed starter or a bad connection at the starter.
No sound at all
Check whether the dash lights come on. If nothing lights up, look for a dead battery or loose terminals. If the lights work but nothing happens when you turn the key, the ignition switch, a neutral safety switch or a fuse may be the cause.
It cranks but won't start
If the engine turns over normally but never fires, the starting system is fine. The problem is fuel, spark or a sensor. A diagnosis saves you from guessing here.
What to try before calling
- Make sure the car is in Park (or the clutch is fully pressed)
- Check that the battery terminals are tight and not corroded
- Try a jump start
- Try your spare key, in case the key chip has failed
If none of that works, call us. We'll diagnose it where it sits.
